Young Puppy Problems

With a pup under three months, we aren’t yet into training and we don’t use any negative motivation until the puppy is older and more mature. The one exception to that, is puppy biting. Sometimes when we’re playing with them, they’ll get excited and go from licking us to biting. It’s more excitement than aggression, but it demands a response.

Since those pups were three weeks old, they’ve been conditioning each other to accept the consequences of biting. Puppy A bites puppy B and puppy B immediately bites puppy A back. So our pup is already conditioned to accept corrections for biting in the most natural way possible. So if the puppy bites us, we “bite the puppy back” by taking its upper lip and pressing it into the little canine teeth until you get a response. We also say the word ”OUT” like a German drill instructor. OUT is the most powerful verbal sound a human can make to a dog. Anytime a pup violates a Cardinal rule (jumping on the counter, chewing on a chair leg , sticking its head in the trash) we can make a strong verbal correction by saying “OUT” firmly.

Biting is the only offense that we use negative/physical corrections for with a puppy under three months.  Read that again. And again. One more time. Biting is the only thing we use negative reinforcement for while the puppy is under three months of age.
