Basic Obedience Training

Twin Lakes Kennel offers a basic obedience course which is the foundation for turning an unruly puppy into a responsible pet. Using a leash and collar, pups are taught basic commands through repetition and consistent reward and consequence. Pups must be at least 6 months old, physically sound, and current on vaccinations. Depending on the development of the pup, this course will take from 4- 6 weeks. We work with the owner to make the pup’s transition back into the family situation a successful experience. The basic obedience training fee also includes boarding.

Started Labrador Retrievers

We take retrievers in for training any time after they’re six months old.  Many of our clients have already gotten their pups off to a good start with some basic obedience and lots of marked retrieves.  We start a beginner retriever at square one and let him show us what he does and doesn’t know. In his first month, he will be obedience trained, have lots of marked dummy retrieves, and be introduced to both birds, gunfire, and water.   At the end of the first month we will be able to evaluate your retriever’s ability and more reasonably predict the training level that you may expect your dog to achieve. Started Retrievers are obedience trained to deliver birds to hand, are reasonably steady, and have had limitless birds thrown for them. They understand hunting scenarios and are ready to start hunting.  It normally takes 3-4 months to get a pup to this level. In general, these Labrador retrievers are a bit younger than the Finished retrievers. They are reasonably steady and they will deliver the bird to hand. These Labrador retrievers are at a point at which they can begin the remote handling program.

Finished Labrador Retrievers

Finished retrievers have had all the basic training and have also gone into advanced handling drills.  They can do difficult multiple marked retrieves and complicated blind retrieves.  It will take most dogs 6 – 8 months to advance to this level.  These turn-key, Cadillac quality Labrador retrievers are not only steady to wing and shot, but they have been through the entire handling program.  This means that with whistles and hand casts, you can command the dog to maneuver in the direction of an unseen bird (blind retrieve) almost like they were a remote control car.
