Labrador Retriever Most Popular Dog in AKC History
In their annual announcement, the American Kennel Club (AKC®) revealed the results of their pure bred registration statistics. Not surprisingly, the intelligent, family friendly Labrador retriever has taken the number one spot on the most popular list for the 23rd consecutive year, the longest reign at the top in AKC history. “We know how popular the Labrador retriever is just by the high demand we have experienced this year,” said Judi. Judi, who is in charge of everything puppy, said, “This has been the strongest year in our forty year history of breeding these beautiful dogs.”
Labrador Retrievers Give Good Therapy
A licensed professional counselor, with thirty years of experience, explained how owning a Labrador retriever can help produce healthier, happier, more well adjusted children and seniors in two recent articles. Here is an excerpt:
Dogs help children to be more physically fit. All dogs, regardless of breed, need to be walked. Children who take their dogs for regularly scheduled walks tend to exercise more than those who have no reason to get up off the couch and leave the TV. The Journal of Physical Activity and Health (2010) concluded that people who walk their dogs generally walk about an hour longer per day than non-dog walkers.
There are a number of explanations for exactly how dogs accomplish all these health benefits. First of all, dogs need walking, feeding, grooming, fresh water, and they encourage lots of playing and petting. All of these activities require some action from owners. Even if it’s just getting up to let a dog out a few times a day or brushing its hair, or going for a walk, any activity can benefit the cardiovascular system and help keep joints limber and flexible. Studies have shown that when people pet animals, their blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature decrease.
