Though the choice of a name came with great difficulty, it came down to the choice between Washington and Columbia with Columbia winning the vote and getting the nod as the new name! The new capital was then designed with broad streets and large lots. Columbia became an official town in 1805 and by 1816 there were over 1000 residents. Columbia was chartered as a city in 1854.
