• As with many of the New England communities, the first inhabitants were various groups of Native Americans. The Pennacooks, An Algonquin tribe, lived in this area. Most of the native tribes left the area by 1725 when the European settlers began to arrive. Scotch-Irish people were the first to arrive. Derryfield was incorporated in 1751. A well-known Revolutionary War hero, General John Stark, was from Derryfield. Samuel Blodget was another influential citizen who developed a canal and lock system that helped to open the trade to the Boston and Concord areas.
