Four Master Hunter labrador retrievers with Woody
Woody with four Labrador retriever Master Hunters at one hunt test.

We have been successful at retriever competitions for almost 40 years.  Woody Thurman of Twin Lakes Kennel, has produced dozens of Master Hunter Labrador retrievers.  Despite our incredible success at the field trials, we are most interested in helping our clients to own and handle the world’s best Labrador Retrievers.   Our commitment to that goal has never faltered.

Master Hunter Labrador Retrievers

Labrador retrievers are the ultimate hunting or gun dogs.  Labs win more field trials and earn more hunt test titles than all of the other breeds combined. According to one source, 20 to 25 percent of the Labrador retrievers in this country are used for hunting or field trials and hunt tests. Hunt tests, sponsored by individual dog clubs and conducted under AKC (American Kennel Club) rules and regulations, are designed to evaluate a dog’s ability to find and retrieve downed birds.  Hunt tests are not competitive, meaning the dogs do not compete against each other.  Instead, their performance is measured against a standard established by the sponsoring agencies.  Labs scoring the necessary points at a given number of tests can earn one of the following AKC titles:
  • (JH) Junior Hunter–first level
  • (SH) Senior Hunter–second level
  • (MH) Master Hunter–highest level
Each level requires more skill.  As the dog advances, hunt tests become more difficult.  A good retriever must be able to remember the location of downed birds, to locate the downed bird, regardless of terrain, retrieve the bird and gently return it to its handler.  The dog must be able to pay attention to its handler at all times and be comfortable with the sound of gunfire.  The title, once earned, becomes a part of the dog’s pedigree. Master Hunter labrador retrieversWe are very proud of titling more than 200 AKC Master Hunter Labrador Retrievers.  Woody has also qualified 47 retrievers at AKC Master Nationals.  He has won the Ducks Unlimited Open Championships twice.  But we are most proud of…

the more than eight thousand (8,000) great hunting Labrador Retrievers we have produced and trained.

Every one of the more than eight thousand Labrador Retrievers came with a guarantee against hereditary defects.  That is a guarantee you won’t get from a puppy mill or a backyard breeder.  During the past thirty-five years at Twin Lakes Kennel, we have searched for the most talented, well rounded, most dominant American field bloodlines.  We breed for natural hunting instinct and tractability and those same qualities produce a gentle, loving and obedient family pet. We really do believe that:

“Going hunting without a retriever is like going on a honeymoon without a bride.”

Core Dog Training Services

Core dog training at Twin Lakes Kennel turns raw enthusiasm into everyday reliability. Our team has more than 45 years of experience working with American field-bred Labradors and shapes steady companions that listen the first time, settle quickly, and respond reliably under distraction

Our approach emphasizes simple commands executed precisely, fair consequences, and repetition that builds trust, confidence, and clear communication between dog and owner.

The Importance of Core Dog Training

Core training establishes the foundation for all advanced work and practical obedience. Heel, sit, here, place, kennel, and calm hold form the language that keeps a dog attentive on walks, polite with guests, and focused during busy or stimulating moments.

With this foundation, advanced skills such as handling drills, blind retrieves, and steadiness to wing and shot progress more efficiently because dogs already understand timing, pressure, release, and the value of listening. Strong core training also nurtures mental discipline, impulse control, and confidence, which carry over into both home life and field activities.

Professional Core Dog Training Services

Our training program is designed for dogs six months and older that are physically sound and current on vaccinations. Training starts with leash and collar work to build precise heel, consistent sits, a quick recall, and a reliable place and kennel routine.

From there, dogs learn a quiet mouth and a clean delivery to hand, along with impulse control around doors, meals, and visitors.

  • Obedience fundamentals: Heel without pulling, sit with duration, here on the first call, place for calm stationing, and kennel on cue.
  • Household manners: Doorway control, polite greetings without jumping, and quiet settling during family time.
  • Field-ready basics: Marked dummy retrieves, introduction to birds, and controlled exposure to water and gunfire appropriate to the dog’s stage.
  • Owner coaching: At the end of the training block, owners receive practical guidance on timing, reinforcement, and daily structure so progress at the kennel carries into real life.

Most dogs complete this core phase in four to six weeks, depending on maturity and prior exposure. Boarding is included for convenience, and we maintain a structured routine that supports steady behavior, rapid learning, and confidence.

Why Choose Twin Lakes Kennel?

  • Proven results that span decades: We have over 200 AKC Master Hunter titled Labradors and 47 Master National qualifiers. Multiple dogs linked to our program are in the Hall of Fame, and our training methods were featured on ESPN for three years.
  • Purpose beyond ribbons: We were part of the team that helped save the lives of U.S. Marines in Afghanistan by training IED detection dogs. This work demonstrates the reliability, focus, and composure we instill in our Labradors.
  • American field lab with superior DNA: We breed only pure American Labradors for hunting, competition, and companionship. Training is open to talented outside dogs, though many clients choose a dog from our own program due to natural aptitude and alignment with the training system.
  • Visit-first culture: Prospective owners are invited to visit our kennel in person to see the dogs and discuss goals. Observing our dogs and facilities firsthand gives a deeper understanding of our methods and the quality of Labradors we raise. Puppies are flown to the owner’s local airport after selection, and we create training plans tailored to each dog’s age and abilities.

Boone Son image
Orry Frye, Proud Owner of “Boone” and “Sadie.”

I just wanted to send y’all an update on how our puppy Boone is doing. He is from the Snatch/Honey litter and he looks just like his father. He’s just over six months old now and he’s panning out to be a wonderful hunt dog.

I began shooting around him just recently and from the very beginning he was fearless. He didn’t even blink an eye when the shots were fired. He just looks straight ahead waiting to be released.

Their puppies come from the finest hunting and field trial/hunt test stock. All will have clean genetic pedigrees. Most importantly, Woody is an honest, straightforward man who will tell you both the strengths and weaknesses of any dog he sells or you wish to have evaluated. I would stake my own reputation on this.”

“For 11 years it was my distinct honor and privilege to serve as chairman of the rules committee for the AKC Retriever Hunt Test program. During that time I got to meet many professional retriever dog trainers all across the United States. Woody Thurman, whom I have known for more than 20 years, was and is my favorite. He is an extremely intelligent, honest, hard working and trustworthy man.

Piper, a new pup, with Bauer
Read what Mindi says about her new puppy, Piper.

I wanted to say thank you, again, for putting up with me during the puppy process! You all were so sweet to send pictures and answer my questions, and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting and working with you. “Piper” is settling in wonderfully! You were also right about how smart she would be! Piper learned “sit” on her second day home, and I can tell that she is already picking up on some of the “getting around” terms I use with Bauer like “this way” to redirect her course. I’m so excited to watch her really start learning!

I just wanted to send y’all a quick note updating you on our sweet Gauge that we picked up back in May (Snatch x Raven). It’s hard to believe that he’s 8 months old and is already going on his first hunts! Here are a few pics of him. You can see how he’s developed. He’s beautiful and is so agile and LOVES to hunt. His drive is unbelievable and he’s surpassed all of our expectations with how smart he is. We hope that you are all doing well and thank you, once again, for our amazing dog.

“We picked up our little guy last week and were very impressed by how intentional they are about raising healthy puppies. Ours is sweet and snuggly - two characteristics you don't often find in a MasterHunter lineage gun dog! He has been my shadow and has already learned so much. Can't wait to see him grow into his birthright and chase so.e ducks!”
