Four Master Hunter labrador retrievers with Woody
Woody with four Labrador retriever Master Hunters at one hunt test.

We have been successful at retriever competitions for almost 40 years.  Woody Thurman of Twin Lakes Kennel, has produced dozens of Master Hunter Labrador retrievers.  Despite our incredible success at the field trials, we are most interested in helping our clients to own and handle the world’s best Labrador Retrievers.   Our commitment to that goal has never faltered.

Master Hunter Labrador Retrievers

Labrador retrievers are the ultimate hunting or gun dogs.  Labs win more field trials and earn more hunt test titles than all of the other breeds combined. According to one source, 20 to 25 percent of the Labrador retrievers in this country are used for hunting or field trials and hunt tests. Hunt tests, sponsored by individual dog clubs and conducted under AKC (American Kennel Club) rules and regulations, are designed to evaluate a dog’s ability to find and retrieve downed birds.  Hunt tests are not competitive, meaning the dogs do not compete against each other.  Instead, their performance is measured against a standard established by the sponsoring agencies.  Labs scoring the necessary points at a given number of tests can earn one of the following AKC titles:
  • (JH) Junior Hunter–first level
  • (SH) Senior Hunter–second level
  • (MH) Master Hunter–highest level
Each level requires more skill.  As the dog advances, hunt tests become more difficult.  A good retriever must be able to remember the location of downed birds, to locate the downed bird, regardless of terrain, retrieve the bird and gently return it to its handler.  The dog must be able to pay attention to its handler at all times and be comfortable with the sound of gunfire.  The title, once earned, becomes a part of the dog’s pedigree. Master Hunter labrador retrieversWe are very proud of titling more than 200 AKC Master Hunter Labrador Retrievers.  Woody has also qualified 47 retrievers at AKC Master Nationals.  He has won the Ducks Unlimited Open Championships twice.  But we are most proud of…

the more than eight thousand (8,000) great hunting Labrador Retrievers we have produced and trained.

Every one of the more than eight thousand Labrador Retrievers came with a guarantee against hereditary defects.  That is a guarantee you won’t get from a puppy mill or a backyard breeder.  During the past thirty-five years at Twin Lakes Kennel, we have searched for the most talented, well rounded, most dominant American field bloodlines.  We breed for natural hunting instinct and tractability and those same qualities produce a gentle, loving and obedient family pet. We really do believe that:

“Going hunting without a retriever is like going on a honeymoon without a bride.”

Advanced Dog Training Services

Advanced dog training at Twin Lakes Kennel takes a talented retriever and builds precise control without dimming natural drive. We bring more than 45 years of hands-on work with American field-bred Labradors, shaping steady, biddable dogs for serious hunting, competition, and life at home.

The focus is clear communication, repetition with fair consequence, and drills that produce confident responses in real-world distraction.

The Importance of Advanced Dog Training

Advanced training transforms basic obedience into reliable, field-ready performance that owners can count on in diverse and challenging situations. Dogs develop the ability to hold lines through dense cover, shifting winds, and varied terrain while responding promptly to crisp whistle stops and precise hand casts.

Work with multiple marks, tight honors, and control under motion builds the retriever’s focus and composure, even when excitement levels peak during hunting or competition. This level of training not only promotes safety and efficiency in the field but also strengthens teamwork between dog and handler.

Dogs learn to make thoughtful, controlled decisions under pressure, which is critical in hunt tests, competitive trials, and real-world scenarios where accurate delivery, calm nerves, and consistent behavior can make the difference between success and failure.

Advanced training develops both the dog’s natural instincts and the handler’s confidence, producing a retriever that is dependable, adaptable, and ready for any challenge.

Professional Advanced Dog Training Services

Training typically begins once a retriever demonstrates a reliable foundation. Our program targets:

  • Handling drills: Sit on the whistle, disciplined hand casts, and momentum control for cold blinds.
  • Multiples and concepts: Tight marks, hip-pocket throws, channel swims, and re-entries to build trust on challenging pictures.
  • Steadiness: Rock-solid behavior to wing and shot, honoring other dogs, and no break on splash.
  • Delivery to hand: Calm mouth, no shopping among falls, and consistent finish in heel position.
  • Environmental fluency: Work across water, cattails, timber, crop rows, and open fields with diversions and scent pools.

Many dogs progress from the started to the finished level within six to eight months of focused work, with timelines tailored to each dog’s aptitude. Outside retrievers with talent are welcome, though we prefer dogs from our own breeding program due to natural aptitude aligned with the training system.

Owner coaching is built in, so the handoff from kennel to home maintains clarity, timing, and daily structure.

Why Choose Twin Lakes Kennel?

  • Track record that spans decades: Over 200 AKC Master Hunter titles and 47 Master National qualifiers signal a consistent standard of work and preparation at the highest levels. Multiple dogs connected to the program sit in the Hall of Fame, and our kennel’s training approach held a three-year feature on ESPN.
  • Purpose that goes beyond ribbons: We were part of the team that helped save U.S. Marines’ lives in Afghanistan by training IED detection dogs, illustrating the stability, focus, and resilience we instill in our working Labs.
  • American field lab with superior DNA: We breed only pure American Labradors from dominant field bloodlines for hunting, competition, and companionship. The program is tuned for that style of dog, with drills that protect drive while building control. Besides dogs from our own breeding program, we also train other talented retrievers that show promise.
  • Clear path from kennel to field: Early evaluations shape a tailored plan, with practical owner instruction at pickup so progress carries forward. Dogs work through real birds, water, and gunfire in a structured sequence that builds confidence step by step.

“I have known Woody and Judy for over 20 years. There are no finer folks. They have my total trust with any dog sent to Twin Lakes for training. The dogs that go to Twin Lakes are worked in drills. Don't expect your dog to come home fat. Working dogs need to be in top physical condition. The most powerful thing about Woody is that his dog work to their...
