Four Master Hunter labrador retrievers with Woody
Woody with four Labrador retriever Master Hunters at one hunt test.

We have been successful at retriever competitions for almost 40 years.  Woody Thurman of Twin Lakes Kennel, has produced dozens of Master Hunter Labrador retrievers.  Despite our incredible success at the field trials, we are most interested in helping our clients to own and handle the world’s best Labrador Retrievers.   Our commitment to that goal has never faltered.

Master Hunter Labrador Retrievers

Labrador retrievers are the ultimate hunting or gun dogs.  Labs win more field trials and earn more hunt test titles than all of the other breeds combined. According to one source, 20 to 25 percent of the Labrador retrievers in this country are used for hunting or field trials and hunt tests.

Hunt tests, sponsored by individual dog clubs and conducted under AKC (American Kennel Club) rules and regulations, are designed to evaluate a dog’s ability to find and retrieve downed birds.  Hunt tests are not competitive, meaning the dogs do not compete against each other.  Instead, their performance is measured against a standard established by the sponsoring agencies.  Labs scoring the necessary points at a given number of tests can earn one of the following AKC titles:

  • (JH) Junior Hunter–first level
  • (SH) Senior Hunter–second level
  • (MH) Master Hunter–highest level

Each level requires more skill.  As the dog advances, hunt tests become more difficult.  A good retriever must be able to remember the location of downed birds, to locate the downed bird, regardless of terrain, retrieve the bird and gently return it to its handler.  The dog must be able to pay attention to its handler at all times and be comfortable with the sound of gunfire.  The title, once earned, becomes a part of the dog’s pedigree.

Master Hunter labrador retrieversWe are very proud of titling more than 200 AKC Master Hunter Labrador Retrievers.  Woody has also qualified 47 retrievers at AKC Master Nationals.  He has won the Ducks Unlimited Open Championships twice.  But we are most proud of…

the more than eight thousand (8,000) great hunting
Labrador Retrievers we have produced and trained.

Every one of the more than eight thousand Labrador Retrievers came with a guarantee against hereditary defects.  That is a guarantee you won’t get from a puppy mill or a backyard breeder.  During the past thirty-five years at Twin Lakes Kennel, we have searched for the most talented, well rounded, most dominant American field bloodlines.  We breed for natural hunting instinct and tractability and those same qualities produce a gentle, loving and obedient family pet.

We really do believe that:

“Going hunting without a retriever is like going on a honeymoon without a bride.”

American Labrador vs. English Labrador

Discover which breed is the perfect fit for your family and lifestyle

When considering a Labrador Retriever, it is important to understand the differences between the American and English types. Both are loyal, intelligent dogs, but their breeding and purpose vary significantly. Comparing the American Labrador vs. English Labrador can help you determine which type best fits your lifestyle and needs.

Let us explore the differences between these two popular breeds, so you can make a more informed decision.

KEY FACTORS American Labrador English Labrador
Appearance Taller, lean, athletic (65-80 lbs) Compact, muscular (60-85 lbs)
Temperament High energy, driven, trainable Calm, easy-going, family-friendly
Purpose & Role Bred for work, field trials, hunting Bred for shows, companionship, obedience
Energy Level Very high, needs activity Lower, relaxed energy
Training Highly trainable, needs active owner Easy to train, good for first-time owners
Ideal For Active, experienced owners Families, first-time dog owners

Appearance: The Key Differences

American Labradors tend to be taller and leaner with a narrower face and longer muzzle. Their bodies are built for athleticism, making them perfect for hunting and working roles. They typically weigh between 65 and 80 pounds and stand around 22 to 24 inches tall.

In contrast, English Labradors are more compact with a blockier head and a broader chest. They are stockier, with a more muscular build, weighing between 60 and 85 pounds. Their shorter and wider frame gives them a sturdier appearance, making them ideal for show competitions and as family pets.

Temperament: Energy Levels and Training

American Labradors are known for their high energy and work ethic. These dogs are driven, highly trainable, and suited for roles that require intelligence and stamina, such as field trials and hunting. Their energetic temperament makes them ideal for experienced dog owners who enjoy an active lifestyle. One difference to note is that Labradors, in general, are better suited as companions rather than as attack or guard dogs.

On the other hand, English Labradors are often more relaxed and calm. Their easy-going nature makes them great companions for families with children or first-time dog owners. Although they are still highly trainable, they tend to have a lower energy level compared to their American counterparts. For this reason, they are better suited for a more laid-back environment.

Purpose and Role: Breeding Focus

The American Labrador is bred primarily for working purposes. With a focus on hunting, field trials, and competitive events, they have a strong drive to perform tasks and excel in various canine sports. Their genetics are focused on agility, endurance, and retrieving abilities, which make them exceptional in the field.

In contrast, English Labradors have been bred more for conformation shows and companionship. Their genetics are designed to meet the physical standards set by breed registries. While still excellent hunters, their primary role is to serve as companion animals that excel in obedience. They are well-suited for families and less demanding work roles.

Selecting Your Labrador: Which One Fits You Best?

If you are looking for a dog that thrives in active, competitive environments, the American Labrador is a great choice. Their drive and stamina make them perfect for outdoor activities, hunting, and rigorous training sessions. However, they require an owner who can match their energy.

Those seeking a calm, affectionate companion for family life may find the English Labrador to be the ideal match, with a friendly temperament and relaxed energy that suits a quieter household.
